Lusaka, 7 October 2025 — At the Digital Government Africa (DGA) Summit, a high-level Workshop brought together delegations from across the continent alongside academic and industry experts to discuss a shared priority: developing common denominators for the security of Digital Identity Wallets between Europe and Africa.
The session introduced ongoing research on “Enhancing Digital Identity Security” and highlighted the need for secure, interoperable wallet ecosystems that respect national sovereignty and support regional integration.
African governments emphasised five key trends: the joint evolution of ID systems and Digital ID Wallets; a strong focus on regional cross-border interoperability; the continued development of the AU Pan-African Interoperability Trust Framework; the centrality of sovereignty; and growing interest in cloud-based wallet architectures.
The Workshop concluded with three forward-looking actions: assessing the reuse of national smartcard infrastructure; improving visibility into national mobile-device ecosystems; and organising a follow-up expert Workshop, with a proposal to convene at the TRUSTECH Conference in Paris in early December.
The conversations in Lusaka made one point unmistakably clear: there is strong momentum to keep advancing this work. Delegations expressed real enthusiasm and a shared willingness to continue exploring practical pathways for secure and interoperable Digital Identity Wallets. The Workshop marked an important first step—and the level of engagement shows that countries are ready to move forward together.
